Huh, that's actually a good question. Mutants are the reason for all the problems anyways, why not blame us for aliens too?

Well, I wasn't going to the whole "blame us for everything" aspect, but it makes sense that people would think "aliens" when confronted with something different and also makes sense that others would then tell that person "hallucinations/delusional"??? Easier to write off as a particularly potent imagination.
